TTA in Texas

See what Sixth Amendment work is happening in Texas.

We worked with the Texas Indigent Defense Commission to:

  • Assist TIDC to prioritize and undertake action items relating to indigent defense funding, oversight, and system building in the state’s 254 counties

We are also working with the Texas Indigent Defense Commission to:

  • Examine relevant data relating to the use of investigators and experts by assigned counsel in both felony and misdemeanor cases.

  • Assess current attitudes and practices by defense lawyers to examine potential reasons for the underutilization of investigators

    • The project included surveying defense lawyers and investigators as well as qualitative interviewing of lawyers, investigators, judges, and court administrators

  • Write a summary report and recommendations on effective ways to encourage use of experts, investigators, and other support personnel. A longer report and presentations on the findings are forthcoming.

We worked with Armstrong County and Potter County, Texas (Amarillo) to:

  • Assess of trial-level adult representation

We are working with the Harris County Clerk (Houston, TX) to:

  • Examine reasons individuals may not be appearing for jury service to enhance jury diversity
    • This will include surveying individuals who did not appear for their jury summons.

We are working with the El Paso County Public Defender to:

  • Assist with creating a training plan for staff, including monthly trainings, recommending speakers, and conference planning
